DIPLOMA IN QUANTITY SURVEYING

In line with the Polytechnic Transformation Roadmap was launched by the Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Hj. Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin on the 25th. February 2010 all courses in the polytechnics have been upgraded. Certificate program has been replaced with diploma programs.

The first intake of Diploma in Quantity Surveying students commencing in July 2010. A total of 43 students graduate Malaysian Certificate of Education has chosen to register on the 21st. July 2010.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

The Quantity Surveyor is a major contributor to the success of projects in all sectors of the economy including industry, infrastructure, healthcare, education, public buildings, retail and commercial construction, residential construction and leisure projects.

As well as in professional quantity surveying practices, the Quantity Surveyor finds employment in industry, national and local government bodies and agencies, contractors and subcontractors, developers, financial and legal companies.

There are many areas of specialization in which a Quantity Surveyor may concentrate. The Quantity Surveyor background being a good foundation for understanding the complexities of modern large-scale projects. Traditionally the Quantity Surveyor independent role on the team comprising client, architect, engineer and contractor has given him a reputation and appreciation for fairness.

This, combined with Quantity Surveyor expertise in preparation and interpretation of contract documents, enables him to settle issues, avoid disputes and ensure the effective progress of a project.


PROGRAMME SYNOPSIS

Diploma in Quantity Surveying will expose the students to the basics aspects of knowledge in Quantity Surveyor theoretically and practically such as lecture, studio work, computer theories and practical training at firms. The scope of program covers the following areas:-

a. Quantities measurement
b. Construction economics
c. Professional practice
d. Management
e. Construction legal and law
f. Procurement and contract
g. Construction and services

The graduates from this program will have potentials to work in both private and government sector. In addition, they will also have opportunities to further their studies in other higher learning institutions.

PROGRAMME AIM (PAI)

Polytechnics graduate of Engineering Programs at Polytechnics will have knowledge, skills and attitude that will allow them to make tangible contributions and meet new technical challenges. The graduates will communicate and interact responsibly and able to contribute effectively as a team member.

They will practice good ethics, able to promote good morality and behavior and will continuously enhance their knowledge and skills. They will be adaptable to new change at the work place. The graduates will possess entrepreneurial skill to prepare themselves for the upcoming challenges.



PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOME (PLO)

Upon completion of the program, the graduates should be able to:-

1. Apply basic knowledge of measurement, construction economics, professional practice, management construction legal and law, procurement and contract, construction and services.
2. Perform diverse job functions in producing Bills of Quantities, tender and contract document, quotation document, pre-estimating report, final account report, schedule of material, progress payment certificate and contract advisor.
3. Identify problems related to measurement of quantity for building and civil engineering works, construction contract and cost.
4. Contribute and communicate effectively in group teamwork to achieve quality of works.
5. Recognize the contemporary knowledge and technologies in term of life long learning.
6. Apply the Quantity Surveyor professional role and ethical responsibilities.
7. Apply the social responsibilities to society and nation, regulation, secure and balance in Quantity Surveyor.
8. Apply the basic quantity surveying process and procedure.
9. Adapts skills in a multi-disciplinary quantity surveying aspects.
